What is West Lakeview Special Service Area (SSA) 27?

SSAs are local, self-imposed tax districts staffed by a volunteer board of mayoral-appointed local residents, employees, and business owners, intended to fund and facilitate expanded services and programs specialized to a district's unique needs beyond the scope of what the City can provide utilizing a small percentage of local taxpayer levy. SSA 27 supports a vibrant local economy and high quality of life for West Lakeview businesses and residents through local investments made by the community for the community.

Services for West Lakeview include:

  • Litter Abatement

  • Landscaping

  • Holiday Decorations

  • Streetscape Furniture

  • Community Events

  • Neighborhood Promotion

  • Public Art

  • Placemaking Initiatives

  • and More!

For more information about SSAs, please visit the City of Chicago's website.

What does a Commissioner do?

Each SSA 27 Commissioner volunteers 1-3 hours of their time each month to make crucial decisions to benefit West Lakeview, with those decisions being carried out by the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce, the Service Provider for SSA 27, and primarily by a full-time SSA 27 Program Manager, Robert Morvay. The SSA 27 Commission may have a maximum of 11 commissioners, and currently has 7.

Am I eligible to be a commissioner?

To be eligible to be an SSA 27 Commissioner, you must reside, own, or be employed within SSA Boundaries. Please see the map and corresponding breakdown to the left to gauge your eligibility. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please email robert@lrvcc.org.

How is a Commissioner appointed?

Potential commissioners should reach out to the SSA 27 Program Manager, Robert Morvay, to verify eligibility, set a time to meet to discuss the SSA, and receive a rundown of the Commission Application process. To learn how to apply, please email robert@lrvcc.org.

After the application is submitted, Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor of the City of Chicago, and will serve a two year, renewable term.

When and where does the Commission meet?

SSA 27 meetings are open to the public and generally take place the second Thursday of each month at 8:30am located at Sheil Park (3505 N Southport Ave Fl 2 Rm E). To see when the next SSA 27 Commission Meeting is scheduled, please see here.

If you’d like to see how an SSA 27 Commission Meeting functions prior to application, all SSA meetings are open to the public.

Are there other ways to get involved besides being a commissioner?

Of course! The SSA has committees that are available to both Commissioners and Non-Commissioners alike.

Streetscape Committee

The goal of Streetscape Committee is to advance SSA 27’s mission of improving and enhancing public spaces and creating memorable experiences within the service area. Members of the Streetscape Committee recommend Streetscape decisions to be voted on by the SSA Commission.

Public Art Committee

The Lakeview Public Art Committee is responsible for identifying innovative artists and securing funding to support the display of public works of art in highly-visible locations throughout West Lakeview. The committee and its recommendations help advance the mission of SSA 27 as well as Friends of Lakeview, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and partner of the Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce.
